Some tropical fish health problems and their cure

You should observe your fish on a daily basis, to see if they are healthy. Look close at their behavior and their skin. Healthy fish are lively, eat properly and have a skin without irregularities. Most diseases happen only when the condition of the fish is weakened. The best prevention is good food and good water. But still it can happen that one or more of your fish get sick. In most cases treatment is possible. Whatever treatment you use, remember to remove activated carbon from your filter because it removes the treatment from the water, but leave air pumps on. You must throw away the carbon, because it may re-infect your tank. After a few days when the illness has gone, you can put new activated carbon in your filter (read the description of the treatment).

If your fish looks like it has been sprinkled with salt or sugar, it probably has fish ick.
This is probably the most common parasitic diseases among tropical fish. It is almost always present in aquariums and infects fish that are in poor health or have had a recent infection that has left them without certain immunities. Ick can become visible on a fish if the fish's natural resistance is weakened from shock, unsuitable water conditions, overcrowding or an improper diet. A fish that has been recently added to the tank can also be a carrier of ick. Therefore , like most fish diseases, the best prevention is to maintain optimum water conditions.

Fish Ick Cure

Because ick is a common problem, many treatments are available. Be sure that the fish ick cure you have can be used on small or sensitive fish or when the fish are weak (that could happen if your fish have ick for several days). If your fish already have ick at this moment and you are looking for a treatment, the we advise you to buy a very safe product like Ick Clear from Tankbuddies. It is more expensive, but your fish have the best chance to survive. If you are looking for an ick treatment to keep at hand just to be able to start the treatment immediately (and you have no small or sensitive fish) then you can use for instance Cure-Ick from 'Aquarium Products'.
